Deluxe Theatre, Fifth Ward, City of Houston, Texas

Profile:The Fifth Ward is a historical political district of Houston, and the Deluxe Theatre drew diverse audiences from 1941 until it lapsed into disuse in the 1980s. Texas Southern University helped raise the funds necessary to bring the theatre back to life as a performance and educational space. The community has access to the new performing arts-themed branch of the Houston Public Library-with electronic and onsite book collections and research materials, including a unique zydeco archive. The 150-seat venue will also host authors, artists, musicians and cultural events.
