Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center at Rice University in Houston, Texas

Profile: Rice University is justly proud of its well-designed campus, characterized by formal quadrangles and courtyards, long view corridors and architecturally significant buildings. The challenge was how to blend a voluminous facility like a new recreation center into that setting. SmithGroup/F&S, as executive architect in collaboration with design architect Lake Flato Architects, responded by raising gymnasium spaces to the second floor, thus reducing the building's footprint. That provided ample open space below for intimate courtyards, a leisure pool and other outdoor recreation uses providing the amenities the university desired, while retaining the traditional, graceful beauty of the campus. The facility is the first certified LEED-NC Silver recreation center in the state.
