James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas

Profile: Not only a showcase for artistic talent and creative works, Gaertner is a world-class academic facility for students in the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication. Along with studios, theater arts shops and computer labs, practice rooms and offices, the building boasts an 800-seat concert hall, 175-seat recital hall, and 150-seat dance theater. Architect WHR designed the centerpiece project of the campus arts complex. Bronze metal panels and sloped roofs make for a "dramatic" exterior, and the brick/block/stone composition reference SHSU's material vocabulary. Warm wood lines the 7,000-SF central lobby that terraces down to an outdoor performance space.
