Student Activity Center, University of Texas, Austin

Profile: In 2006, UT students passed the Student Activity Center referendum, creating a small semester fee to build and maintain a new student union to provide social, cultural, educational and recreational programs. Construction began in 2009 and The SAC opened its doors in January, 2011. The LEED Gold-certified structure offers 149,000 square feet of departmental, dining, and distributed lounge space (plus 25,000 feet of outdoor seating). Departments including the Leadership and Ethics Institute and Student Government use the meeting rooms, ballroom, black box theater and legislative assembly room. The SAC also houses a portion of the Liberal Arts department, a dance rehearsal space with sprung floor, a 500-seat auditorium, and retail food services.
