Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital, Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center, San Antonio, Texas

Profile: The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital houses the nation's newest Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center, designed to provide extensive rehabilitative care to veterans suffering from severe injuries to more than one organ system. The new Center is the fifth level-one, rehabilitative center in the country. Phase I is an 84,000 SF three-level building for rehabilitation, transitional living, and prosthetics and Phase II will include the renovation of 32,500 SF offices and exam room spaces in the main medical center building. The VA's goal was to create an atmosphere that supports health and promotes quality patient care, while facilitating a 'healing environment.' Special consideration was given to the acoustical sound control of the facility as noise transmission has been shown to directly affect the patient's ability to recover.

Services: DataCom Design Group provided consulting services including the development of the acoustical design and recommendations to prevent sound disruption between rooms and main traffic areas. Utilizing specialized modeling software and acoustical calculations, our Sr. Acoustician provided proven interior acoustical approaches to reduce noise transmission throughout the facility.
